GRC Social Impact Essay Competition 2024

Solutions for Good

A platform for ambitious high school students to share ideas for social good

The 2024 GRC Global Essay Competition was a major success, gathering students from over 48 countries to analyze social impact issues and to present innovative solutions.

Essays covered a diverse array of topics, reflecting the intersection of innovation, policy, and social impact. Students examined the role of AI and automation in fostering economic inclusion, explored strategies for enhancing efficiency in public sector governance, and analyzed advancements in global healthcare accessibility. Discussions also centered on human rights implementation across different governance levels, sustainable economic growth in the face of climate change, and the power of education in driving gender equality and social mobility.

We're thrilled to announce the 2024 GRC Competition winners and hope that the competition sparked interest in social impact among participants.

Evaluation Criteria

In the essay evaluation process, our main goal was to ensure fairness and objectivity. To achieve this objective, our team introduced multiple strategies to minimize grading biases:

  • Initially, all essays were evaluated by at least one judge.
The top 100 essays with the highest marks advanced to the next round, where each essay was evaluated by three judges.
The top 20 essays with the highest marks advanced to the final round, where each essay was evaluated by thirteen judges.

  • Essays were graded based on a comprehensive rubric, with a focus on the following criteria:

    • Clarity and articulation of the thesis

    • Problem-solution structure

    • Innovative and unique perspectives

    • Quality and insightfulness of arguments

    • Quality of the data and examples supporting the arguments

    • Logic, structure, and flow of the essay

    • Effectiveness of communication, style, and grammar.

  • Each essay was anonymized and presented in the same format / font.

  • The evaluation order was randomized to minimize reading order bias.

  • Scores were normalized for evaluator’s average score as some judges gave on average higher scores than others.
